Culinary Institute of America Student Housing

Challenge

Create a site plan that reflects the brand of the Culinary Institute of America and builds on the lush agricultural history of the region, and treats stormwater runoff.

Solution

For managing water resources

  • Organize site plan around a waterway system that directs drainage to bioswales
  • Use native plantings in these bioswales to provide filtration for rainwater run-off
  • Collect additional rainwater in a rain garden planted with native riparian species
  • Utilize the storm water management device as an aesthetic part of the landscape

For meeting other needs

  • Include large orchards of fruit and nut trees to reflect the heritage of the region
  • Use espaliered grapes and fruit trees to outline the vegetable and herb gardens
  • Plan for educational experiences in the gardens and for edible resources for the cooking school

Special Features

  • Rain garden will provide privacy screening for residence and habitat for birds and butterflies
  • Edible landscape will provide students with easy access to organic gardening and direct experience with growing foods
